The Leon Katzen Memorial Lecture Series is endowed by the Katzen Family Foundation and Lacy Katzen LLP. The purpose of the lecture series is to bring visiting scholars to Rochester each year during Israel’s Independence Day to speak on issues of importance to supporters of Israel. Congregation Beth Sholom proudly hosts the lecture series.
Leon Katzen was a long-time resident of Rochester and was one of the pillars of the Jewish community. He co-founded the law firm Lacy Katzen LLP in 1948 and today it is one of the leading law firms in Monroe County, employing more than 100 people.
Throughout his life, Leon was a strong and vocal proponent of the State of Israel. In 2011 he was honored as an Ambassador of Humanity by Congregation Beth Sholom in recognition of his life-long passionate commitment to the support of Israel.
The second annual Leon Katzen Memorial Lecture will take place on April 25, 2017, featuring Daniel Pipes as the guest speaker. Mr. Pipes is president of the Middle East Forum and an affiliate professor at the University of Haifa. He is universally acclaimed as an authority on Islam and the Middle East. CBS Sunday Morning said he was "years ahead of the curve in identifying the threat of radical Islam." The Boston Globe states "If Pipes's admonitions had been heeded, there might never have been a 9/11." The Washington Post deems him both "a prominent conservative intellectual" and "perhaps the most prominent U.S. scholar on radical Islam." The New York Times calls him "smart and well-informed.".
The Leon Katzen Memorial Lecture Series is a fitting way to commemorate the life and spirit of Leon Katzen and to carry his pro-Israel message forward indefinitely.
